ABILITIES & SKILLS
IMMORTALITY
Osiris is the god of the dead and resurrection. Having found new life in the Underworld, he can now no longer die; instead, he is in a position of eternal judgement, responsible for the renewal of others.
SHAPESHIFTING
Osiris has many different forms. His natural appearance is that of a green-skinned man, with wrapped legs, dressed in the style of a Pharaoh. He can however appear as an ordinary human, or as a ram, the animal with which he is traditionally associated.
NECROMANCY
Osiris is able to command the dead. He can raise them and command them, creating armies of undead to fight for him. This includes command of skeletal, mummified and corpse armies, but would also include command of undead myths such as vampires, ghosts, zombies, etc. Permissions for this ability are here.
DEATH MAGIC
The opposite of Necromancy, Osiris is able to cause death and decay through magic. This is visible around him as a grey aura. Touching the aura will cause immediate withering and decay. Osiris is also able to initiate this through physical touch, though this is not automatic; he must will this magic to work.
LIFE MAGIC
Osiris is the god of renewal and fertility. His touch can restore lost power, renew spent energy, and at its most powerful, restore the dead to life. This is not necromancy, as it would not raise an undead creature under his command; instead, the person would be fully resurrected. **Note:** as an agent of ma'at, Osiris considers death to be a natural part of life. Therefore, he would not under normal circumstances resurrect the dead; its use is exceptional, granted as a reward to only the most worthy of recipients.
SOULREADING
As Lord of the Dead, Osiris has the ability to read the contents of a person's character through their soul. He sees history and motivation, and can see whether the person is telling the truth or lying. Again, permissions for this ability are here.
OMNIPRESENCE
Osiris is only truly present in the Duat. However, the Duat is everywhere; it is another realm which only the dead can enter. Osiris can temporarily appear anywhere in the human realm; however, he is present for no more than 12 hours at a time before he must return to his own realm. He can however appear in multiple places at once; his true self remains always in the Duat, where he will rule for all time.
CURRENT INFORMATION
After hundreds of years in captivity, the goddess Isis walks on Earth once more. Sensing her presence, her husband Osiris chooses to send himself to her, in hopes of reuniting with his family. He finds himself at Mythian Academy, where he agrees to teach in order to reclaim some lost time.

PERSONALITY

Osiris is a god of judgement, balance, and righteous kingship. His personality reflects both this status and his (very) long history as the Lord of the Dead.

Balance

Osiris believes in maintaining balance in every aspect of life. Essentially, this means that he believes everything has it's place; this includes good and evil, morality and immorality, even justice and injustice. The 'bad' in life as a role to play along with the 'good'. Osiris' role is not in any sense to eliminate or fight against the bad; rather, he wants to preserve overall balance. He will therefore accept that some bad things need to happen in order for life to go on. He tends not to worry or grieve about bad, or even terrible events taking place. Rather, he looks at the big picture, and believes that all things will pass. Good times will come again, and they will be as temporary as the bad. He is extraordinarily patient, and can sometimes seem apathetic when it comes to the ills of the world. He judges, but he is not an agent of justice; for that, look to his son Horus.

Fairness

He is a fair judge. He looks for the truth of a situation, and he does not hold grudges or seek to advance his favourites. It is within his power to condemn a soul to total destruction, to give them an eternal afterlife, and even to grant new life – but it is a person's own actions during their lives that determines how he will judge. Osiris might personally like you, but it won't stop him from condemning you if you deserve it. Likewise, he might revive someone he hates if they've earned it. He often seems apathetic because of this. Osiris is not someone who will take sides; the truth of any matter will speak for itself.

Righteousness

While he understands the place that evil has in maintaining the balance of the world, Osiris sees himself as morally good. He considers himself to have been the rightful Pharaoh in life, and therefore sees Heru/Horus as the rightful Pharaoh now. It should however be noted that his idea of morality will not always fall in line with what modern humans consider to be moral; for example, Isis is both his wife and his sister, and for him there is no taboo against this. Killing a member of his family would however be a strong taboo. He is also generally benign, but despite seeing that cruelty has a place in the world, he will still enact punishment for it at the end of a person's life. He believes that people must make their own choices and accept the consequences. Though he is considered a merciful judge, due to his association with rebirth and renewal, he will do his duty when it comes to punishing evildoers, seeing this as part of the balance of all things.

Solemnity

Osiris is not known for his sense of humour. He is a staid and serious person, and due to his attitude towards balance, can also seem apathetic. He is also very old, and has witnessed the very best and worst of humanity as it has passed through his kingdom. He is difficult to surprise or upset, and very slow to anger, since he knows that divine justice will eventually come to all men.

HISTORY

Osiris is one of the children of the earth god Geb and the sky goddess Nut, along with his siblings Set, Isis, Horus the Elder and Nepthys. His queen is his sister-wife Isis. He inherited the kingship of Egypt from his ancestors in a line stretching back to the world's creator, the sun god Ra. Osiris' original powers were connected with the giving of life, righteous kingship, and the rule of ma'at, or the balanced natural order.

His story begins with his death. Many versions of this story exist with slightly different narratives. The version Osiris will tell you is this: that he earned the enmity of his brother Set when Nepthys, Set's sister-wife, disguised herself as Isis and slept with Osiris, resulting in the birth of Anubis. Set drowned Osiris in the Nile, and in an attempt to prevent Isis from interfering, dismembered him and scattered the pieces across Egypt. It is said that there were forty-two pieces, equating with the forty-two nomes of Egypt. His death represents the struggle between order and disorder, or balance and chaos.

Set then claimed the throne of Egypt. Isis, assisted by Nepthys, searched for her husband's body. She found every part except his penis, which had been eaten by a fish, and had to be reconstructed with magic. Isis was able to restore Osiris to life for long enough to conceive a child with him. Afterwards, he dies again, and his body is embalmed as the first mummy.

Following the loss of her husband, Isis must keep her pregnancy hidden from Set. Eventually she gives birth to Horus the Younger, whom she raises and keeps safe with her magic. At the same time, the goddess Tawaret detains Set in an attempt to protect Isis. Set returns to find the adult Horus has claimed the lands of Upper Egypt, and the two engage in a conflict which lasts for eighty years.

Finally, the other gods step in, and insist on a non-violent resolution. A contest for sexual dominance follows, and eventually, Horus is declared the victor. Horus becomes the rightful Pharaoh of Egypt, and Set retreats to become Lord of the Desert and its Oases. Thus order is restored. Horus has the body of Osiris brought to Abydos, where it is entombed and funerary rites are performed. This allows Osiris to return to life in the Duat and become the Lord of the Dead, paralleling his son's role as king of the living. Osiris' original life-giving powers are altered, giving him command over death and resurrection. In his new role, he is charged with the judgement of the dead and is associated with renewal, in particular the annual growth of crops in the fertile lands around the Nile.

The Judgement of the Dead

As Lord of the Dead, Osiris presides over the final judgement of the dead. If a person is found to have led a life in line with the principles of ma'at (balance), then they will be permitted to enter the Kingdom of Osiris, where they take part in an eternal afterlife. If found guilty of disorder and chaotic deeds, their spirit is fed to a devourer, which obliterates them completely. Those judged to be particularly moral may be granted true resurrection, through which they can be reborn in the world of the living.

APPEARANCE

Osiris is tall, well-built and imposing. His eyes have an ageless quality, making him seem far older than he looks. If you look away, the corner of your eye might catch something different; white clothes, a flash of green skin. It's gone as soon as you look back, vanished as if it had never been there. He carries a fresh scent, like newly turned earth, or cut grass. When he's angry, a grey aura surrounds him. It smells like death.
